Words of Wisdom for Writing About Disability and Disabled People

The disabled population often has a love hate relationship with the media.

On one hand, it’s great to have reporters interested in issues that concern or directly affect people with disabilities.

However, all too often, stories of disability turn into inspirational or pity pieces that go nowhere in changing the public perception of what it means to live with a disability.

It’s great when journalists take the time to get it right.

Red Nicholson wrote an article for the Spin Off with some advice to journalists and editors on how best to write stories on disability.
